2024-Nov-20 | To play in the 60+ playdowns, do you have to be registered in a masters league? ie) I am registered in a masters league but for playdowns, another 60+ player who plays in regular mens/mixed leagues (but not in a masters league) is wondering if he is elgibile for the masters playdowns. If he can play in the playdown, but there is something he needs to do first, please advise Thanks | Thanks again for your question. It was an important one. I wanted to be sure my response to you was right so I consulted with our executive and received a few refinements that I’d like to share with you below: The PCMCA has designed the rules to compete in the PCMCA playdowns to be reasonably straightforward. The key qualifications are: 1. You are eligible by age – in your situation, you are 60 years old this calendar year. 2. You are a full-time player (not a spare) in a PCMCA-sanctioned league. a. Your league is aligned with the PCMCA and the league collected dues for each qualified member. 3. All members of your playdown team play in the same club in PCMCA sanction leagues. If you and your potential teammates can put a tick beside each qualification criteria, you and your team are probably qualified to fill out an entry form. My last piece of advice to share with you is to check and confirm your situation with your league organizers. Good luck and I hope you consider entering the playdowns. |
2024-May-18 | We heard something that the PCMCA fees were changing this year. We are just finishing our testing for the upcoming year. I don't see anything in the newsletters or on the website. What is the 2024-2025 fee for PCMCA . | Thanks for your note. What you were hearing is correct. During this spring AGM, the PCMCA Board of Directors voted to change PCMCA membership fees from $5 to $8. This will be effective commencing the 2024-2025 curling season. The reason for the change was due to several factors, including increasing costs and a significant reduction in sponsors to the PCMCA as well as to the individual Zones, including Zone 4. Perhaps the single biggest factor is the increase in costs of ice rentals to conduct Zone and Provincial/Combined playdowns. PCMCA membership fees were frozen for a very long time and the increased fees will be used to help the PCMCA and Zones to continue to provide service to all of its members in the most cost-efficient manner possible. Please feel free to get back to me if there is anything that I can clarify or explain better. Thanks for bringing the lack of news on the fee increase to our attention. We plan to put something together something to put on the PCMCA website that provides more depth and clarity to the fee change. |

2023-Dec-13 | Why is it that a stick curler can play in any playdowns e.g. 70 + men but a non-stick player can’t play in the stick playdowns? | A good question, which has recently resurfaced year after year. The short answer is that stick curlers are not allowed in Canada in any events that lead to a national and then the world championships. That covers everything from Juniors to Seniors. Therefore since Masters competitions (60+ years) which do not lead to the worlds is basically a free-for-all. To facilitate all curlers (the elderly, disabled, stick and wheelchair curlers can enter into any playdowns. It has often been a sore point with some higher-level competitive curlers but it is part of the "curl for life" program that allows all curlers to compete when otherwise their competitive curling aspirations would be over. Stick curling competitions are subject to Curl Canada rules. With its rapidly growing in popularity, stick curling have some championships on their own, governed by its unique rules and format. These championships, to the best of our knowledge, have no playdowns, just direct entries. We believe the PCMCA/BCIMCA are the first associations to have stick curling playdowns that lead to the Provincial championships. Due to the relatively unique format and rules of stick curling competitions, to date, there has been no compelling reason to expand that format beyond stick-delivered stones. The trendy doubles format, complete with its unique format and rules seems to be capturing the interest of all other curlers. |
2023-Nov-22 | Could you please tell me how to set up an account on the PCMCA website? Thanks | The PCMCA website is designed to enable members to access information generated specifically for PCMCA members. I’m referring to the history and stories of the PCMCA, listings of the member Zones, clubs and leagues, bonspiels and events hosted by the clubs, and contact information for the PCMCA and Zone executive members. Typically, PCMCA members signing into the website have specific responsibilities to curate the website such as to annually enter member information (e.g. name, sex, year of birth), and information relating to local bonspiels, playdowns and interesting topics. If they are one of the designated members, they need to get authorization from the webmaster to perform those functions and are assigned a password. This is the security protocol dictated by the webmaster to protect the integrity of the website, the PCMCA and our membership. |
2023-Nov-3 | To PCMCA executive, Can someone send me the link to view the PCMCA EVENT calendar? What I am looking for are the combined playdown dates which I believe will be in Vernon/Armstrong. I just want to make sure it does not conflict with our year end Master's league windup bonspiel in mid March (March 11-15th). Ray Lebrun, Port Moody | Hi Ray, The only way into the Events calendar is to go to: www.pcmca.ca and then click on “Event Calendar”. Links to this page do not work. Presently there are 45 events posted there on two pages. If you wanted to just see the Zone 3 events, please click on “Zone” at the table gets immediately sorted by zone. If you want to see more information for a particular event, click “Select” next to the event and more info is made available in the box or Event Notice on the right of the box. At this time, there isn’t information posted on the PCMCA/Combine Playdowns. However, they are going to take place in Vernon/Armstrong on March 23-27... I found the page for the BCMCC competitions! Please go to the PCMCA website. Don’t sign in but click on Championships. Then…on the right side, click on the middle box and you’ll find the information on the BC Masters Combined Championships. Best regards! Wayne |
